Student Magazine Analysis

  • The masthead simple took 'sixth' from 'sixth form' to make a memorable, short, self-explanatory masthead that the magazine is about/for students in sixth form.
  • The language techniques used fairly formal and easy to read and understand such as 'Yes, it's time to start thinking about university applications' and 'Catch up on the latest rugby tips..'.
  • The layout is very organized and simple with only a headline and sell line. The colour scheme isn't clear but it looks like a mixture between blue, white and black and yellow, black and white. The font is generally very professional and similar except from the words 'University Applications' which doesn't fit the font scheme.
  • The photography is a head to torso shot of presumably a student who is staring straight on. Although the sell line photography links to the sell line itself the main image has no relation to the headline of university and university applications.
  • The front cover does follow some layout conventions as the masthead is at the top of the magazine, the banner is somewhere towards the bottom, there is a bar code with the issue number and date, there is a button and the sell line isn't covering the models face.
  • The target audience are sixth former's. This is shown through the masthead of 'The Sixth' and the headline mentioning UCAS and university applications. Also, the banner shows a feature article of a 'guide to the top media degrees in the country'.
